The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse
Dir. Vincente Minnelli. 1962, 153 mins. U.S. 35mm. With Glenn Ford, Ingrid Thulin, Charles Boyer, Paul Henreid. According to French critic Jean Douchet, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse was, at the time of release, Minnelli’s “most important film to date . . . it sums up and surpasses what went before, as Vertigo, for example, does for Hitchcock.” Adapted from the novel by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, earlier made into the silent Valentino classic by Rex Ingram, this dreamlike and unusual production was updated to the World War II era and shot partly on location in Paris. The film stars Glenn Ford as an Argentinean cattle rancher who moves to Europe in the late 1930s, ultimately joining the French Resistance. Though in its day the film was a critical and commercial flop at a fragile moment for MGM, the historical complexities and technical achievements of this late Minnelli epic are undeniable.
