Dir. Vincente Minnelli. 1949, 114 mins. U.S. 35mm. With Jennifer Jones, James Mason, Van Heflin, Louis Jourdan. Minnelli’s improbably stunning rendition of Gustav Flaubert’s oft-adapted classic novel casts Oscar-winner Jennifer Jones as Emma Bovary, the provincial doctor’s wife whose pursuit of romance and social status lead to financial ruination and tragedy. Lavishly mounted and emotionally penetrating, this Hollywood rendition of the eternally controversial tale of adultery was called by the great critic Robin Wood “perhaps the most neglected and misrecognized of [Minnelli’s] major works” and features some of Minnelli’s most astounding camerawork, especially during a virtuoso mirrored ballroom sequence that one will never forget.
