Dir. Vincente Minnelli. 1956, 122 mins. U.S. 35mm. With Kirk Douglas, Anthony Quinn, James Donald, Pamela Brown, Everett Sloane. This extraordinarily vivid, Technicolor biopic about the life and art of Vincent Van Gogh is among Minnelli’s greatest visual achievements. Kirk Douglas received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor as a mythic, tortured incarnation of Van Gogh, while Anthony Quinn won Best Supporting Actor for his earthy, unforgettable turn as his friend and fellow carouser Paul Gauguin. With its gorgeous widescreen compositions, sometimes taken over by Van Gogh’s canvases, Lust for Life is an enveloping melodrama about two of the director’s recurring preoccupations: the creation of art and the trappings of masculinity.
